Listening Unlimited has come to understand that school-age stress and even depression have reached a level of concern. Lori believes that THE WORK can be an effective tool for students to proactively manage stress and deal with depression. As someone who has in the past experienced depression for a period of her life, Lori strongly believes that education is key. She believes that preventative maintenance is the solution and that it is now time for a paradigm shift!
Drawing on her experience of effectively applying THE WORK in dealing with depression and stress overload, Lori brings forth and shares a personal understanding and compassion for those searching for ways to a peaceful life. As a result of THE WORK’s impact and efficacy on her healthy state of mind and overall well-being, Lori is passionate about introducing it to youth as an alternative method of dealing with the many stresses that they face today.
Lori offers talks and workshops for student groups. She is also able to create a tailor-made program, after careful consultation with you regarding the specific needs of her potential audience. Lori believes in maximizing the time spent with your students in order for them to gain a good understanding and effective experience of THE WORK of Byron Katie, so that they can begin to apply it immediately.
In the following, Lori expresses a few ways in which her life has been impacted from doing THE WORK of Byron Katie:
Depression:
I don’t believe depression just happened to me in a given moment or on a given day, nor do I believe that I am a victim of a chemical imbalance in my body. Through different experiences in my life, I have come to believe that depression is cumulative – based on beliefs that I held, which I correlated to experiences that occurred in my life, thus proving these beliefs true for me. When I believe something to be true, yes, chemicals in my body are released. Only now when something upsetting occurs, I apply THE WORK and ask myself, “Who would you be without that thought?” I then feel clear and peaceful. The chemical balance in my body feels restored that quickly.
My experience with depression happened after my marriage broke down. The diagnosis was ‘clinical depression’. I don’t believe it was this one event that had caused me to become depressed. I believe it was many events with which I had not dealt. This event was merely, “The straw that broke the camel’s back.”
Now when I feel upset , I do THE WORK as soon as I notice. This prevents overwhelm. At times when I do chose to ignore it, the upsets continue to compile until I crash under the pressure of all the stressors, leading me back to do THE WORK. For me, it just makes sense to deal with the upsets when they occur, so I do.
I have also noticed that when I don’t do THE WORK, I will look for someone to blame for my unhappiness. That’s the nature of my mind, always searching to reason and justify, and blame allows for an answer to that search. However, the story that goes along with the blame is self-perpetuating in itself and never truly brings about peace, leading me back to do THE WORK. Personally, integrating THE WORK into my daily life has proven to be invaluable to my overall well-being, and well worth the time.
Stress:
I used to wake up at 2:30 a.m. in the morning with anxiety attacks, racing thoughts, overwhelm, panic, fear, and even terror. In my experience, when I took the time to notice and applied THE WORK to stressful situations, I found that the anxiety was rooted in my thoughts. For me, there are lots and lots of thoughts. Some may call it mind-chatter. As I write these thoughts on paper and question them applying THE WORK, I feel peace and I no longer wake up at 2:30 a.m.
Conflicts:
As we go through life, we interact with so many diverse personalities. Some may be deemed a blessing while others, a challenge. Dealing with conflicts with others has to be the biggest area of learning that I have experienced in my life. I used to live my life believing that I was RIGHT! I expected other people to change in order for me to be happy! Since I have been doing THE WORK, I realize how amusing and even absurd this belief and way of thinking is. When I do THE WORK, I step into other possibilities that feel true or truer. I never would have entertained opening to and considering these other possibilities before THE WORK. I now see that wanting to be RIGHT was a significant source of my pain, preventing me from joining in the flow of life. This is something that I had to personally experience in order to learn and understand the freedom that is possible. By doing THE WORK, I got, and continue to get that chance. It is also my experience that THE WORK can be equally effective in dealing with inner-conflict.
